Online NDIS Jobs Roadshows in South East Queensland are so far proving to be a great success for students to enter the workforce and meet employers in disability.

At NDIS Jobs Roadshows up to 11 employers join to talk about what it is like to work in the sector, the skills and attributes they look for in employees and some of the current job vacancies they have available.

Students participate in an NDIS Toolbox Sessions beforehand to gain an understanding of what it takes to work in disability, prior to attending the Jobs Roadshow and hearing directly from employers.

Sharyn Morgan, Business Development Consultant from BlueStone Medical Care, recently took fifty students to an NDIS Jobs Roadshow and said the innovative recruitment method broke down barriers to students which meant they were able to be more engaged to meet with potential employers.

“Students immensely benefit from the NDIS Jobs Roadshows as they don’t have to leave work or their study commitments for a whole day which takes the pressure off them,” she said.

“They have the opportunity to engage face to face with employers, rather than at physical employment fairs or events where there is little opportunity to get in front of employers and grab their attention due to the number of other applicants at the table.”

After the event one-on-one speed interviews take place between candidates and employers where a second interview or job offer may be offered to them.

Ms Morgan said one student’s experience at an NDIS Jobs Roadshow helped steer them towards their chosen career path of disability after completion of their Certificate III in Individual Support.

“We have one student who was adamant upon enrolling into the Certificate III Individual Support course that they wanted to work in Aged Care facilities.”

“After she attended the NDIS Toolbox Session, she changed her pathway towards working in the disability sector as she felt this would be quite rewarding along with the hours would better suit her.”

Ms Morgan said it was important for students to have current information from Services as well as trainers who are passionate about the industry in order to make their choice of career pathways.

It is estimated 36,000 new workers are needed for the Queensland disability sector over the next five years to meet demand.

As part of the NTSSS Growing the NDIS Workforce Strategy, NDIS Jobs Roadshows are linking up employers and employees to fill a wide range of jobs in the disability sector ranging from Individual Support Workers to Allied Health Assistants and Child Protection Support Workers.
