Will There Be a Season 7 of ‘9-1-1’? What Fans Need to Know
The show was renewed for season 7 episodes, but it’s going to look so much different.
Well, folks, 9-1-1 wrapped season 6 in May, capping off a season full of twists and turns by those working at Station 118 in the Los Angeles Fire Department (LFD). What’s more, the show left fans’ jaws on the floor, thanks to an era full of engagements and life-threatening emergencies.
Perhaps, the most heart-pumping of all the episodes was the finale on May 15, featuring yet another unexpected crisis at hand. Apart from a high-stakes mission involving Bobby (Peter Krause) and Hen (Aisha Hinds), celebrating an engagement between Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney (Kenneth Choi), plus other heart-pumping scenarios, Fox also came forward with shocking news.
The show got renewed for season 7, but folks won’t get to watch new episodes on the network where it all began. Curious to know why? Here’s what to expect from season 7, including its network change, cast, premiere date, spoilers and more.
Is there season 7 of 9-1-1?
On May 1, fans learned that 9-1-1 was picked up for season 7. But instead of it airing on Fox, Deadline announced that the show would be moving to ABC for the new season. Amid the surprise revelation of jumping networks, actress Aisha Hinds reflected on Instagram how excited she is to embark on a new TV future.
“Our 9-1-1 family will be moving to @abcnetwork for our SEVENTH season. ” she captioned the post. “Thank you for your palpable presence throughout the years. You have journeyed with these characters from the beginning, allowing us the opportunity to entertain and engage with you, while you afford us unyielding support. We are delighted and excited to see what our new home has in store… SEE YA NEXT SEASON. #911onABC .”
When folks saw Aisha remark about the season renewal, they immediately congratulated her in the comments. “Very exciting news! So glad I get to see your characters’ stories continue to unfold on my screen. You guys must be thrilled. Congratulations on the renewal! See you in Season 7! ✨,” one person wrote. “SEASON 7 BAY BAY 🔥👏🔥👏,” a different follower exclaimed. “So glad we get to continue on this journey with you and Hen, and the rest of the FireFam! 😍,” another added.
Is there a release date for 9-1-1 season 7?
As far as a release date, it’s hard to say. When ABC unveiled their 2023-2024 TV schedule back in May, 9-1-1 wasn’t on the official list. What’s more, the show appeared to be delayed amid the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, with the former starting around the same time as the show’s move to a new network.
Thankfully, the WGA strike is no longer, as the group struck a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) in late September. Alongside the big news, Deadline reported that the writers’ room for the hit procedural drama officially went back to work on the upcoming season in early October. While the SAG-AFTRA strike is still very much in effect, this novel development is definitely something to keep an eye out for.
Although this is not necessarily a hiccup, it just means that it may be longer before we see the 118 once again. Despite there not being much out yet about if it will have a winter 2024 season premiere, we’ll notfiy you about any news on the show in the coming months.
Make sure to hit “save” at the top of this article for future updates, so you can get the latest information on when 9-1-1 will be back.
Who is in the 9-1-1 season 7 cast?
Based on the way things left off at the end of season 6, here’s who we can expect to return in season 7:
- Peter Krause as Bobby Nash
- Angela Bassett as Athena Grant Nash
- Corinne Massiah as May Grant
- Marcanthonee Jon Reis as Harry Grant
- Oliver Stark as Evan “Buck” Buckley
- Kenneth Choi as Howard “Chimney” Han
- Jennifer Love Hewitt as Maddie Buckley
- Aisha Hinds as Henrietta “Hen” Wilson
- Ryan Guzman as Eddie Díaz
- Gavin McHugh as Christopher Díaz
One actor who could possibly return at some point is John Harlan Kim, who portrays Albert Han. He first came to the 118 in a recurring role for season 3 before becoming a main cast member in season 4. But after taking a step back after being unhappy with the LAFD in season 5, fans saw the character get written out of the storyline. Still, since Fox (now ABC) nor John didn’t express the character demotion, it’s plausible to think Albert might return in season 7 . possibly for his brother Chimney’s wedding to Maddie?
Why is 9-1-1 moving from Fox to ABC?
In an official report from The Hollywood Reporter in early May , there was a major reason for 9-1-1 moving from Fox to ABC. The network chose to axe 9-1-1 to lower the costs for producing new shows. The outlet reported that the drama is owned by Disney’s 20th Television and Fox paid more than $9 million in licensing fees for each episode to appear on its network. Despite it being the No. 1 broadcast drama in the adults 18-49 demographic for television, Fox chose to instead renew its spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star for season 5 and only pay between $6 million and $7 million per episode.
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, 9-1-1 has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons,” said Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television Group, in an official statement. “It’s a privilege to keep 9-1-1 in the family . we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air.”
While there aren’t any spoilers for 9-1-1 season 7 just yet, Oliver Stark spoke with Variety about switching networks and how it affects 9-1-1 moving forward. As he explained to the outlet, it wasn’t a huge surprise to the cast when the news came out about going to ABC. What’s more, he’s excited to see how the drama unfolds in the future.
” There have been rumors for a while swirling around that something like this might happen,” he told the publication. “So, it’s not like we were completely in the dark or anything like that. I think, in some senses, it’s exciting. Fox has been a really great home for us and made us feel very welcome . But there’s also a possibility of now switching over to ABC opening up a new audience for us and exposing us to a new audience and possibly reinvigorating the show.”
Despite higher-ups at Fox saying that it would be “extremely unlikely” to ever see 9-1-1 reunite in a crossover with its spin-off 9-1-1: Lone Star (which the network renewed for season 5), Oliver ventured to say that folks could maybe see the 118 collide with another ABC show based in Los Angeles.
“I don’t know if that would ever be a possibility or not. I don’t really quite understand the legalities of that,” he added. “If it is an option, I think we’re always game for it. It’s a lovely thing to see those universes, those worlds collide. I don’t know, maybe it even opens us up to possible other crossover with ABC procedurals. Maybe we end up on The Rookie.”
9-1-1 Season 7 Gets Promising Update: When Will It Release?
9-1-1, the series centered on Los Angeles’ first responders, got an exciting new update regarding its seventh season.
Unlike most modern procedurals, 9-1-1 encompasses a wide range of agencies and their staff members, telling a unique adventure that highlights L.A.’s police department, fire department, paramedics, and dispatchers.
Featuring Angela Bassett’s LAPD Patrol Sergeant Athena Grant-Nash alongside Kenneth Choi, Peter Krause, and Jennifer Love Hewitt, the show earned praise for its diverse casting, action, and sense of realism over the first six seasons.
9-1-1 Gets Update for Season 7
Deadline shared that the 9-1-1 series officially opened its writers’ room for Season 7 starting on October 2 following the conclusion of the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike.
While the show won’t be able to move into production until the SAG-AFTRA strike comes to an end, this allows the writers to start developing the story for the show’s next season.
Also per Deadline, 9-1-1 was canceled by Fox on May 1 before Season 6 ended but immediately picked up by ABC for Season 7 in one of the biggest network switches in recent memory.
Disney Television Group president Craig Erwich praised the show for being “one of the most defining and original dramas on network television” during its run, expressing his honor to see the show continue:
“Thanks to the creative drive of Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk and Tim Minear, as well as the talented cast, ‘9-1-1’ has been one of the most defining and original dramas on network television over the last six seasons and we are honored to bring it to the esteemed group of series on ABC. It’s a privilege to keep ‘9-1-1’ in the family with 20th Television producing, and we look forward to telling more heart-racing and uplifting stories about these beloved characters on our air.”
9-1-1 star Aisha Hinds also celebrated the network move on Instagram, thanking fans for their “palpable presence” and expressing her excitement to see what the cast’s “new home has in store:”
“Our ‘9-1-1’ family will be moving to ABC for our SEVENTH season. ” Thank you for your palpable presence throughout the years. You have journeyed with these characters from the beginning, allowing us the opportunity to entertain and engage with you, while you afford us unyielding support. We are delighted and excited to see what our new home has in store… SEE YA NEXT SEASON. ”
When Will 9-1-1 Return for Season 7?
Over the course of 9-1-1’s run, each new season has typically been renewed in May before beginning to air the following September, giving the team a four-month gap to develop each new set of episodes.
Although this gap serves as a good way to predict when Season 7 will begin its run, the biggest question mark remaining is when the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike will end, allowing the show’s cast to return to work.
If that comes in the immediate future, the earliest that 9-1-1 could begin its new run on ABC would be in February 2024, although that would be optimistic.
Should the strike end before the end of 2023, that date would most likely be pushed to Spring 2024, meaning fans would get their 9-1-1 fix again sometime between March and May.
There’s also the question of how many episodes the next season will be with the move from Fox to ABC, with fans waiting to find out about any other major changes to the show’s status based on this move.
9-1-1 is now streaming on Hulu.
