Hispanic baby names for girls on the move in 2012

First place once again goes to Sofía, who has been at the top of the list for six years. Isabella remains in second place this year, despite her best efforts to dethrone Sofia.

In general, the top 10 list saw little change compared with last year, when Camila, Valentina, Mariana, Valeria, Gabriela, and Daniela took the first few spots.

The only new entries in the top 10 are Ximena and María José, knocking out Gabriela and Daniela. This is the first time that the most popular compound name for girls, María José, appears on the top 10 list.

One of the names that rose this year to the top 100 is Noa, a name of Hebrew origin that means rest and tranquility. Along with Mia, Zoe, and Ana, Noa is one of the shortest names on the list, while Alessandra and Montserrat are the longest.

The biggest difference we saw this year was the sudden rise of Romina, which went from number 87 to number 49, and the fall of Juana to 89 after occupying spot 33 in 2011.

Other changes this year? Regina, Laura, and Salomé climbed more than 20 places, while Olivia and Fabiana, Adriana, Maite, Manuela, Carolina, Bianca, Florencia, Josefina, Guadalupe, and Paola plummeted.

What’s the story behind all these changes in popular names?
