Shampoo and Co-Wash

Cleansing products like shampoo and co-washes are the 1st step in the Curlsmith Method. It’s the first thing you should do in the shower (unless you decide to use a pre-shampoo treatment). Cleansing is key to keep a healthy scalp and avoid build-up that can weigh down your curls and make them look dull. There are many types of detergents, each of which will provide a certain level of cleansing and should be used at different times depending on your hair needs and lifestyle. Co-washes and low-poo shampoo are great for everyday, while clarifying shampoo is great when you need a deep cleanse.

Shampoo and Co-Wash

Curly hair shampoo

Cleansing is key to maintaining a healthy scalp, as dirt and build-up can suffocate hair follicles. Use a co-wash for a delicate cleanse, a gentle shampoo for your regular washes and a clarifying shampoo every 4-5 washes for a deep curl detox.

Cleansing shampoo and co-wash for curly hair

Cleansing products like shampoo and co-washes are the 1st step in the Curlsmith Method. It’s the first thing you should do in the shower (unless you decide to use a pre-shampoo treatment). Cleansing is key to keep a healthy scalp and avoid build-up that can weigh down your curls and make them look dull. There are many types of detergents, each of which will provide a certain level of cleansing and should be used at different times depending on your hair needs and lifestyle. Co-washes and low-poo shampoo are great for everyday, while clarifying shampoo is great when you need a deep cleanse.

Why is it important to cleanse curly hair?

A consistent cleansing routine helps balance the scalp and ensure no excessive build-up occurs, keeping your hair healthier. Our scalp constantly produces an oil-like substance called sebum. Over time, sebum accumulates on the scalp, together with dirt and build-up from leave-in products. If this debris isn’t removed regularly, in the long run it can block hair follicles and cause a plethora of issues, from itchy scalp to flakes, and even eventually affect your hair growth.

Co-wash or shampoo?

There are two main types of cleansing formulas for curly hair: co-wash and shampoo.

Co-washes are cleansing conditioners, they are a cream formula with a little bit of cleansing ingredients inside, so they don’t foam and provide very gentle cleansing.

Shampoos are gel-like formulas, they foam and have a more intense cleansing power. They can be gentle everyday options or deeper clarifying detergents depending on the amount of surfactants they contain.

How strong should your cleanser be?

You should choose your cleanser primarily based on your lifestyle. If you are someone who washes their hair very often, like everyday or every other way, you should opt for a gentle co-wash that will not strip the natural oils from your curls. If you wash a bit less often, like 2-3 times a week, you should choose a gentle sulfate free shampoo, which will provide a deeper cleanse while still protecting your strands’ moisture. Regardless of what you choose as your regular cleanser, you should always switch it up for a clarifying shampoo every 4-5 washes to really detox your scalp.

How to pick your cleanser based on your hair needs

When picking a cleanser you should also consider your hair needs.

  • Dry Hair: if you have dry curly hair, then the co-wash from our Moisture Recipe is the best product to keep it moisturized for longer.
  • Damaged Hair: if your hair is damaged and fragile, consider our Strength Recipe to replenish its protein needs.
  • Colored Hair: if you’re looking to boost your hair color, the Color Recipe will help enhance its vibrancy and shine.
  • Itchy or flaky scalp: if you suffer from itchy or flaky scalp, then you may want to look at our Scalp Recipe options.
  • Sensitive Scalp: if you are sensitive to fragrance, check out our dermatologically tested and 100% scent-free Shine Recipe.
